Safety Rules in Athletics for Primary 2
Athletics includes running, jumping and throwing activities. Children can enjoy these events safely by following instructions, using equipment carefully and giving others enough space.
Basic Athletics Safety Rules
- Listen to the teacher: Pay attention to instructions before starting an activity.
- Warm up first: Walk, jog gently and stretch with the class to prepare your body.
- Wear suitable clothes: Use comfortable sports clothes and well-fitting trainers or running shoes.
- Keep the area tidy: Put bags, bottles and other objects away from the running and jumping spaces.
- Stay in your space: Keep to your lane or waiting area so you do not bump into another child.
- Do not push: Give other children room and wait for your turn.
- Stop when told: Freeze or move to the safe waiting area when the teacher gives the signal.
Safety During Running and Relay Races
Check that the track is clear before running. Start only when the teacher says to go, and run in the correct direction or lane. At the finish line, slow down safely instead of stopping suddenly in front of another runner. Walk back outside the track so you do not get in the way of children who are still racing.
During a relay race, pass the baton carefully inside the marked changeover area. Do not throw the baton. If it falls, pick it up only when it is safe and follow the teacher’s instructions.
Safety for Jumping and Throwing
For long jump or high jump, wait behind the line until the landing area is clear. Land on the soft sand or mat with both feet when possible. Leave the landing area quickly by walking to the side, not across another child’s jump.
Throwing events need extra care. Never throw a ball, beanbag, javelin or other object unless the teacher gives the signal. Everyone must stand behind the safety line while a child is throwing. Walk to collect equipment only after all throws have stopped and the teacher says it is safe.
Looking After Yourself and Others
- Drink water during breaks, especially on a hot day.
- Tell the teacher if you feel pain, feel dizzy or cannot breathe comfortably.
- Tell an adult immediately if another child falls or gets hurt.
- Use kind words and encourage others without distracting them.
- Take a break if you are tired, and return only when the teacher says it is safe.
Safe athletics means being prepared, following directions and caring for everyone on the field. These simple rules help Primary 2 pupils run, jump and throw with confidence while reducing the risk of accidents.
