Standard Football Pitch Size in Meters: Length, Width and Markings
A football pitch can look identical on television from one stadium to the next, yet its dimensions are not always the same. The Laws of the Game allow a range of field sizes, provided the pitch remains rectangular and the markings meet official requirements.
For a standard adult football pitch, the field is generally between 90 and 120 meters long and 45 and 90 meters wide. International matches use a narrower range: 100 to 110 meters in length and 64 to 75 meters in width.
How big is a standard football pitch?
The length of a football pitch is called the touchline distance, while the width is measured along the goal line. Under the Laws of the Game, a non-international pitch may have these dimensions:
- Length: 90–120 meters
- Width: 45–90 meters
These limits explain why there is no single universal answer to “how many meters is a football field?” A smaller ground may suit a compact stadium, while a larger pitch creates more space for passing, movement and defensive coverage.
Many professional pitches are close to 105 meters long by 68 meters wide. This measurement is widely used in elite football and is also the recommended size for major international competitions, although the permitted international range is broader.
International football pitch dimensions
For international matches, the permitted playing area is more restricted:
- Length: 100–110 meters
- Width: 64–75 meters
A 105-by-68-meter pitch is therefore a common reference point for a full-size professional football field. It provides a playing area of 7,140 square meters, excluding surrounding run-off space and technical areas.
The pitch must be rectangular, and the length of the touchline must be greater than the length of the goal line. The same dimensions apply whether the surface is natural grass or an approved artificial playing surface.
Football pitch markings and their measurements
The white lines are part of the playing area, so their edges determine the boundaries. All markings must be continuous and should not be wider than 12 centimeters.
The halfway line and centre circle
The halfway line divides the field into two equal halves. At its midpoint is the centre mark, surrounded by a centre circle with a 9.15-meter radius. Players from the opposing team must remain outside this circle until the kick-off begins.
The goal area
Two lines are drawn at right angles to the goal line, 5.5 meters from the inside of each goalpost. They extend 5.5 meters into the field and are joined by a parallel line, forming the six-yard box, also known as the goal area.
The penalty area
The penalty area extends 16.5 meters into the field from the goal line. Its side boundaries are placed 16.5 meters from the inside of each goalpost. The penalty mark is 11 meters from the midpoint of the goal, and the penalty arc has a radius of 9.15 meters.
The corner arc
Each corner of the pitch contains a quarter-circle with a 1-meter radius. The ball must be placed inside this arc for a corner kick.
Football goal size in meters
A full-size football goal is 7.32 meters wide and 2.44 meters high. The width is measured between the inside edges of the goalposts, while the height is measured from the ground to the underside of the crossbar.
The goalposts and crossbar must have the same width and depth, and they may not exceed 12 centimeters. Their shape must be safe for players, with approved materials and securely anchored construction.
Pitch size compared with other football fields
Youth football, small-sided football and recreational formats use smaller fields than the standard adult game. Their dimensions depend on the players’ age, the number of players and the competition rules. A five-a-side pitch, for example, is not expected to match a full-size 11-a-side football field.
This is why the phrase “football field size in meters” needs context. A regulation adult pitch can vary substantially, while a specific league or tournament may impose its own preferred dimensions within the limits of the Laws of the Game.
Quick reference: standard pitch dimensions
| Feature | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Adult pitch length | 90–120 meters |
| Adult pitch width | 45–90 meters |
| International pitch length | 100–110 meters |
| International pitch width | 64–75 meters |
| Common professional size | 105 × 68 meters |
| Goal size | 7.32 × 2.44 meters |
| Penalty mark from goal line | 11 meters |
| Centre-circle radius | 9.15 meters |
So, the most useful short answer is that a standard adult football pitch can measure 90 to 120 meters long and 45 to 90 meters wide. For international football, the usual range is 100 to 110 meters by 64 to 75 meters, with 105 by 68 meters serving as a common professional benchmark.
