Why Did Messi Leave Barcelona? The Real Reasons Behind His 2021 Exit
Lionel Messi did not leave Barcelona because he suddenly chose another club over the team where he had spent his entire professional career. His departure in August 2021 came after a complicated collision between Barcelona’s financial crisis, La Liga registration rules and the collapse of contract negotiations.
Messi had joined Barcelona’s academy as a child and became the club’s greatest player, winning numerous league titles and four Champions League trophies. Yet even that relationship could not overcome the financial restrictions surrounding the club at the end of the 2020–21 season.
Why Barcelona could not register Messi’s contract
Messi’s Barcelona contract expired on 30 June 2021. The club and the player reached an agreement in principle for him to remain, with reports indicating that Messi was prepared to accept a significant pay reduction. However, Barcelona still could not register the new deal under La Liga’s financial control rules.
Those rules link a club’s permitted wage bill to its revenue and financial position. Barcelona had accumulated heavy debt and carried a very large salary bill, including expensive contracts for several senior players. Its spending limit was therefore far below what was needed to register Messi, even after the proposed reduction.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta initially suggested that an agreement could be completed, but the club later announced that it could not renew Messi because of “financial and structural obstacles.” La Liga’s regulations did not allow the league to approve the contract simply because both parties wanted it. Barcelona had to reduce its wage commitments or increase its income before registering new player salaries.
Barcelona’s financial crisis and the breakdown of trust
The registration problem was the immediate reason Messi left, but the background had developed over several years. Barcelona’s finances had deteriorated through high operating costs, major transfer spending and long-term salary commitments. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic also reduced match-day and commercial income.
The club’s previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, had faced growing criticism over sporting decisions, finances and his relationship with Messi. In August 2020, Messi had already tried to leave Barcelona by activating a clause in his contract. The club disputed his interpretation of that clause, and Messi ultimately stayed rather than enter a legal battle with Barcelona.
That episode damaged the relationship, even though Messi continued to perform at an extraordinary level. When his contract finally expired, the financial circumstances meant that a new agreement could not be completed in time. This is why explanations that Messi simply wanted to abandon Barcelona miss the main point: by 2021, he wanted to stay, but the club could not legally register the deal.
Why Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain
Once Barcelona confirmed that Messi could not remain, he became a free agent. Paris Saint-Germain moved quickly and offered him a two-year contract with an option for a third season. Messi signed for the French club in August 2021, ending a Barcelona senior career that had lasted more than two decades.
His move to PSG was therefore not a conventional transfer. Barcelona did not receive a transfer fee because Messi’s previous contract had ended. Instead, the exit resulted from the failure to register a renewal. The decision also reflected the financial reality of modern football: a club can want to retain its most important player and still be prevented from doing so by wage controls, debt and registration rules.
Was Messi forced out of Barcelona?
In practical terms, yes. Messi’s earlier request to leave in 2020 showed that he was open to ending his Barcelona career, but events in 2021 were different. The club’s public explanation, the wage-limit rules and the contract timeline all pointed to the same immediate conclusion: Barcelona could not put his new contract into effect.
Messi later returned to Barcelona for an emotional farewell appearance and continued to speak warmly about the club. But a return as a player did not happen at that time. His departure was the result of a financial and regulatory crisis, not a simple falling-out or a decision based only on sporting ambition.
